AAIA Classical Archaeology Seminar

Dr Kristen Mann | AAIA and Harvard Centre for Hellenic Studies in Greece

For decades, researchers have challenged and exposed latent male bias in Classics and Greek archaeology, in both primary textual sources and modern scholarship. Yet despite cogent, at times firebrand, deconstructions and increasingly diverse voices, the dominance of male perspectives and distortive biases remains difficult to shake in 2022. Specifically, this presentation considers persistent, more unconscious, bias in the evidence we select and privilege – and that we afford less weight to – when reconstructing ancient lived experience through a gendered frame.

Kristen Mann is the 2022-2023 Harvard CHS Early Career Fellow in Greece, AWAWS Treasurer, and AAIA DHP Director. An expert on Zagora and EIA settlement archaeology, field methods, and social history, her interests span Mediterranean history, digital archaeology, and intersectional feminist theory more broadly. Kristen’s work is informed by 15 years’ diverse field experience on over 35 projects.
