Archaeology, Museums, Heritage and Material Culture Seminar: From mammals to microbes: Musings on a research career in archaeological science

Professor Keith Dobney | The University of Sydney

From mammals to microbes: Musings on a research career in archaeological science.

As an archaeologist (first) and the new Head of SOPHI (second), I thought the Archaeology, Museums and Heritage Seminar Series would be a great opportunity for me to give an overview of my previous research trajectory, provide some highlights of the many different projects I and my collaborating colleagues have been involved with, and outline new areas and potential that continue to excite me and get me out of bed in the morning! I’ll detail what I think are some of highlights of our work on human-animal relationships (which will include raptors, rodents, dogs, pigs and even Pacific salmon), explore domestication and commensalism, set sail on a reconstructed Polynesian catamaran and very probably become animated about work on ancient diet and palaeomicrobiomes. I’ll also introduce a completely different research tack I’m now on that is very close to my heart – a project on the recent wartime heritage of the Orkney islands. Since much of this resonates with work already being undertaken across related Departments and Disciplines at USYD, my hope is to stimulate discussion and thoughts around possible future projects and collaborations.
