Four years behind the pub: Preliminary results from the Triabunna Barracks excavation

Over four field seasons between 2016-2019, archaeologists from the University of Sydney and Australian National University conducted collaborative excavations at ‘The Barracks’ in Triabunna, TAS. These excavations trained students from around Australia in single context excavation, buildings survey, and historical artefact identification. The site is known as the barracks because of some (now contested) historical evidence that there was a Regiment of British soldiers stationed in the still-standing Georgian buildings, said to date to the 1840s. Excavations recovered evidence for building activities across the 19th and 20th century history of this site, limited but compelling evidence for early contacts between British settlers and Aboriginal Tasmanians, and tens of thousands of historical artefacts. The long-term, multipurpose archaeological record of the site reflects a long-term history of rural life in remote colonial frontiers. This archaeological heritage resonates strongly with Triabunna’s living communities who still identify closely with their local history.
