In Print or Prospect | Writing the Shortest History of the Soviet Union

As of 1980, the Soviet Union under Leonid Brezhnev could congratulate itself on reaching a safe harbour of calm, relative prosperity and international recognition after half a century of war and turmoil following the Bolshevik Revolution of October 1917.  Scarcely more than a decade later, without a shot fired, the Soviet Union abruptly ceased to exist. Whatever happened? This is the question I set out to answer in The Shortest History.
